IMPORTANCE
Segregation of waste is the sorting of waste into different categories for ease of disposal, collection and sorting (during recovery and recycling process). Segregation of waste at the source (homes) helps residents understand the type of waste they are create and makes them mindful of the products they buy. Furthermore, it helps the waste collection service providers differentiate between the types of waste and where they should go after collection (for example, dry waste first go to a Materials Recovery Facility for sorting and wet waste would go to a composting facility). Ultimately, segregation at the source can help save time, resources (spent manually segregating tons of waste previously unsorted), and reduce the amount of waste that goes into the landfill.
