Waste Segregation

IMPORTANCE

Segregation of waste is the sorting of waste into different categories for ease of disposal, collection and sorting (during recovery and recycling process). Segregation of waste at the source (homes) helps residents understand the type of waste they are create and makes them mindful of the products they buy. Furthermore, it helps the waste collection service providers differentiate between the types of waste and where they should go after collection (for example, dry waste first go to a Materials Recovery Facility for sorting and wet waste would go to a composting facility). Ultimately, segregation at the source can help save timeresources (spent manually segregating tons of waste previously unsorted), and reduce the amount of waste that goes into the landfill.

WET WASTE

Biodegradable waste like food scraps and organic materials for composting.

HOUSEHOLD HAZZRDOUS WASTE

Dangerous household items like batteries, cleaners, and paints for safe disposal.

DRY WASTE

Non-biodegradable waste like plastics, metals, and glass for recycling.

HOW TO SEGREGATE

Waste segregation is divided into three broad categories and they need to be disposed of into separate bins:

  1. Wet waste
  2. Dry waste
  3. Household hazardous waste
